The Yard Operative / Steel Loader is responsible for the safe and efficient handling, movement and storage of structural steel materials to support manufacturing operations. Working within a busy outdoor yard environment, the role involves loading and unloading deliveries, preparing materials for production, operating lifting equipment and ensuring all materials are received, stored and dispatched accurately.
The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining operational efficiency while adhering to the highest standards of health, safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities
Safely load and unload lorries using overhead cranes, forklifts and side loaders.
Receive, inspect and organise incoming steel deliveries in accordance with operational requirements.
Verify delivery documentation and ensure materials are accurately recorded and stored.
Pick structural steel sections, plates and other materials for production machinery.
Load, unload and stack steel onto shotblast machines and other processing equipment.
Safely move materials throughout the yard and manufacturing facility using approved lifting equipment.
Carry out manual handling duties in accordance with safe working practices.
Maintain accurate material identification and traceability throughout the production process.
Work closely with production teams to ensure materials are available to meet manufacturing schedules.
Maintain high standards of housekeeping within the yard and storage areas.
Report damaged materials, equipment faults or safety concerns promptly.
Support stock control activities as required.
Comply with all company Health & Safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
Wear the appropriate PPE and promote a safe working culture at all times.
Undertake any other reasonable duties required to support business operations.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential

Physically fit and capable of carrying out manual handling activities.
Ability to work accurately within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Willingness to learn and undertake training.
Desirable
Previous experience working within a structural steel, manufacturing, engineering or heavy industrial environment.
Experience operating heavy plant or material handling equipment.
Basic understanding of structural steel products including beams, plates, flats and angles.
Experience loading and unloading heavy materials.
Previous experience working in an outdoor industrial environment.
Preferred Qualifications
The following are advantageous but not essential, as full training will be provided:
Overhead Crane Licence
Forklift Truck Licence
Side Loader Licence
Experience operating mobile plant
Working Environment
Outdoor yard environment with exposure to varying weather conditions.
Regular manual handling of steel materials.
Operation of lifting equipment and plant machinery.
PPE must be worn at all times.
Compliance with all company Health & Safety procedures is essential.
