We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join an MEP engineering company working on the HS2 project. The successful candidate will take a lead role in the design, technical coordination, and delivery of electrical engineering systems across the project.
The role requires strong technical expertise in electrical design, the ability to manage complex engineering interfaces, and experience overseeing design development from concept through to construction, testing, commissioning, and handover. The successful candidate will ensure all designs and installations comply with relevant standards, project specifications, and HS2 requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the development, review, and coordination of electrical engineering designs, drawings, calculations, and technical specifications.
- Undertake and verify electrical design calculations, including load assessments, cable sizing, voltage drop, protection coordination, lighting, and containment design.
- Ensure electrical designs comply with relevant British Standards, industry regulations, project specifications, and applicable HS2 requirements.
- Manage electrical design interfaces with mechanical, public health, civil, structural, and other engineering disciplines.
- Review and approve technical submissions, design packages, drawings, and engineering documentation within the scope of delegated authority.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to electrical engineers, designers, and site teams.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to resolve technical queries and ensure effective design coordination.
- Lead design reviews, technical workshops, buildability assessments, and value engineering exercises.
- Identify design risks, technical issues, and potential clashes, implementing appropriate solutions to maintain project quality and programme.
- Provide technical support during installation and resolve site-based engineering and design issues.
- Oversee electrical installation inspections, testing, commissioning, and handover activities to ensure compliance with approved designs.
- Monitor design progress, technical deliverables, and engineering quality against project deadlines and requirements.
- Ensure appropriate design risk assessments and health and safety considerations are incorporated throughout the engineering process.
Requirements
- Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in electrical engineering within an MEP, building services, infrastructure, or rail environment.
- Demonstrable experience leading electrical design activities, including calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Strong understanding of electrical engineering standards, regulations, and design best practice.
- Experience using electrical design and modelling software, such as AutoCAD, Revit, and relevant calculation tools.
- Proven ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering designs and manage complex technical interfaces.
- Experience providing technical leadership, reviewing design deliverables, and supporting less experienced engineers.
- Strong understanding of construction methodologies, installation requirements, testing, commissioning, and project handover.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, stakeholder management, and organisational skills.
- Previous experience on major infrastructure or rail projects is highly desirable, with HS2 project experience considered a significant advantage.
Key Competencies
- Strong technical leadership and electrical design expertise.
- Ability to lead design development and provide practical, buildable engineering solutions.
- Excellent understanding of MEP coordination and multidisciplinary design interfaces.
- Strong commercial awareness and understanding of programme, quality, and delivery requirements.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and resolve complex engineering challenges.
- Proactive approach to quality assurance, design risk management, and continuous improvement.
