Location: Epsom, Birmingham, Leeds or Glasgow (Hybrid / UK-wide flexibility)
Contract Type: 12-month minimum contract (Inside IR35)
Rate: Up to £65 per hour (Umbrella)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior HV Cable System Design Engineer to support the delivery and growth of a specialist high-voltage cable engineering capability within a leading multidisciplinary engineering environment.

This is a senior technical role offering the opportunity to work on major onshore and offshore transmission-scale projects, contributing across the full project lifecycle from feasibility and FEED through to detailed design, installation support, and commissioning.

The role also includes mentoring junior engineers, supporting technical excellence within the team, and playing an active part in client engagement and business development activities, including bids and proposals.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver HV cable system design for major transmission projects (onshore and offshore)
• Support FEED, concept, and detailed design activities across HV cable systems
• Produce and review key technical deliverables, including:
• Cable system studies and calculations
• Cable routing and installation design
• Cable rating and thermal analysis
• Installation and jointing specifications
• Engage with clients to understand technical requirements and develop engineering solutions
• Support preparation of bids, proposals, and technical submissions, including resource planning and cost input
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including primary, secondary, civil/structural, project management, and construction teams
• Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and subcontractors
• Attend site visits and support installation, testing, and commissioning activities
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior and developing engineers
• Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and client specifications

Required Experience

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification
• Proven experience in HV cable system design, including manufacture, installation, testing, and commissioning
• Experience working on high-voltage / extra high-voltage transmission projects
• Familiarity with major utility or transmission client standards (e.g., National Grid, SPEN, SSEN or equivalent)
• Strong understanding of cable system engineering principles and design processes
• Experience across FEED and detailed design stages
• Exposure to site installation, commissioning, or operational support activities
