We are seeking an experienced and driven Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Rail & Infrastructure Engineering team supporting the delivery of the HS2 programme.
The successful candidate will lead the design, coordination, and technical delivery of electrical systems across complex rail and infrastructure projects. Working within a multidisciplinary MEICA environment, you will provide technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through installation, testing, commissioning, and handover.
This role requires strong technical capability, leadership skills, and the ability to manage multiple stakeholders while ensuring designs are compliant, efficient, and buildable.


Key Responsibilities

Electrical Engineering Design

  • Lead the design and development of electrical engineering solutions for major infrastructure and rail projects.
  • Prepare and review:
    • Electrical calculations
    • Technical specifications
    • Design reports
    • Load assessments
    • Protection studies
    • Cable sizing calculations
    • Earthing and bonding studies
    • Technical drawings and schematics
  • Design and coordinate systems including:
    • LV power distribution systems
    • Small power installations
    • Internal and external lighting systems
    • Emergency lighting systems
    • Standby power systems
    • UPS systems
    • Earthing and lightning protection systems
    • Building services electrical systems
    • Electrical infrastructure associated with stations, tunnels, and operational facilities

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Electrical Engineers, Graduate Engineers, and Design Technicians.
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.
  • Support the development of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Assist with resource planning and technical capability development within the engineering team.

Design Coordination & Integration

  • Coordinate electrical designs with mechanical, controls, civil, structural, architectural, and systems engineering disciplines.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews and technical workshops.
  • Manage design interfaces and resolve technical conflicts across project disciplines.
  • Ensure effective implementation of BIM and digital engineering processes.

Design Assurance & Compliance

  • Ensure all designs comply with:
    • HS2 Technical Standards
    • BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)
    • Building Regulations
    • Relevant British and European Standards
    • CDM Regulations 2015
    • Client and project specifications
  • Participate in design assurance activities, including IDC/IDR reviews and technical approvals.
  • Lead design risk assessments and support safety-by-design initiatives.

Project Delivery

  • Manage electrical engineering activities throughout all project phases.
  • Monitor design progress against programme milestones and budgets.
  • Review supplier and subcontractor technical submissions.
  • Support procurement activities and equipment selection.
  • Provide technical support to construction and commissioning teams.

Testing & Commissioning

  • Support the development of testing and commissioning strategies.
  • Review commissioning documentation and test procedures.
  • Attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and integrated systems testing.
  • Assist with fault diagnosis, technical issue resolution, and final project handover.

Stakeholder Management

  • Act as a key engineering interface with clients, consultants, contractors, and supply chain partners.
  • Attend project meetings and provide technical updates to project teams and senior management.
  • Support tender submissions, technical proposals, and business development opportunities.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5-10 years' experience in electrical engineering design within infrastructure, rail, transportation, utilities, or building services environments.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • LV electrical distribution systems
    • Lighting design
    • Earthing and bonding
    • Power quality and protection systems
    • Electrical installation design
    • Testing and commissioning processes
  • Experience producing and reviewing technical calculations and design documentation.
  • Familiarity with engineering assurance and design review processes.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead technical work packages and mentor junior engineers.

Desirable

  • Previous experience on HS2, Network Rail, London Underground, Crossrail, or major infrastructure projects.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status, or actively working towards professional registration.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution such as the IET.
  • Experience using:

    • Navisworks
  • Knowledge of BIM Level 2 and digital engineering delivery.
  • Understanding of NEC contracts and project delivery frameworks.
