We are currently seeking an experienced Principal Substation Secondary (Protection & Control) Design Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team delivering major electricity transmission and substation projects.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior P&C engineer to take a leading technical role across complex, transmission-scale projects, while also contributing to team development, client relationships, tendering and business development.
The Role
As Principal P&C Design Engineer, you will lead the delivery of FEED and detailed design workstreams for major substation projects, ensuring engineering solutions are technically robust, compliant and delivered to the required standards.
You will provide technical leadership to the P&C team while working closely with multidisciplinary engineering, project management, commercial and delivery teams.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading P&C FEED and detailed design activities for major transmission substation projects.
- Providing technical leadership and expert guidance across the P&C discipline.
- Reviewing and assuring P&C plant and secondary system designs.
- Ensuring technical deliverables meet client specifications, relevant standards and project requirements.
- Leading design reviews and supporting technical assurance and quality processes.
- Providing mentoring, technical development and leadership to engineers within the team.
- Supporting recruitment, resource planning and workforce development.
- Coordinating interfaces with Primary, Civil & Structural and Project Management disciplines.
- Managing interfaces with suppliers, subcontractors and wider engineering teams.
- Acting as Tender Manager for HV plant packages where required.
- Reviewing technical supplier offers and supporting the preparation of bids and proposals.
- Providing technical input into resource planning, cost estimates and commercial submissions.
- Chairing and participating in design and hazard review meetings.
- Attending client meetings, site visits, FATs and SATs where required.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
- Supporting business development activities and identifying opportunities for future work.
About You
We are looking for a technically strong and commercially aware Principal or Senior P&C Engineer with significant experience within the electricity transmission and substation sector.
You should have:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience.
- Proven experience in Protection & Control design for electrical substations.
- Strong experience delivering FEED and detailed design.
- Experience working on transmission-scale substation projects in the UK or internationally.
- Strong knowledge of relevant electrical standards, including IEC and IEEE.
- Experience reviewing and assuring P&C engineering designs and technical deliverables.
- Experience preparing technical bids, proposals and cost estimates.
- Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering environments.
- Strong technical leadership and team management capabilities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work within demanding timescales.
- Willingness to travel to client and project sites when required.
- The right to work in the UK.
Desirable
- Working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status through the IET or equivalent professional institution.
- Chartered Engineer status.
- Previous experience delivering major UK transmission projects.
- Experience within a major engineering consultancy or transmission network environment.
- Experience leading and developing P&C engineering teams.
- Previous responsibility for tender management and bid ownership.
- Experience attending FATs, SATs and site-based design reviews.
