The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an experienced Principal Pipeline Engineer to join a rapidly growing Energy Transition team supporting the design and delivery of cutting-edge low-carbon infrastructure projects across the UK.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading technical role on nationally significant projects focused on the future of the UK energy sector, including hydrogen transmission systems, carbon capture infrastructure, natural gas networks, and wider decarbonisation technologies.

Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, you will take ownership of pipeline and mechanical engineering design activities across the full project lifecycle - from early-stage concept development and FEED through to detailed design, construction, commissioning, and long-term operational support.

This position offers the opportunity to work on some of the UK's most innovative energy transition projects while operating in a highly technical leadership capacity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead pipeline and mechanical engineering design activities across major low-carbon infrastructure projects
  • Deliver engineering solutions across feasibility studies, concept development, FEED, value engineering, and detailed design phases
  • Develop and review technical deliverables including pipeline design packages, AGI designs, piping specifications, and engineering calculations
  • Perform wall thickness calculations and high-pressure pipeline engineering assessments
  • Undertake pipeline routing studies, diversion design work, and population density assessments
  • Support the development of 3D plant models and integrated mechanical layouts
  • Provide technical leadership across pipeline and layout engineering disciplines
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop integrated engineering solutions
  • Support technical bid submissions, tender activities, and engineering proposals
  • Ensure designs remain compliant, technically robust, cost-effective, and aligned with industry standards
  • Resolve engineering integrity, operational, and design challenges throughout project delivery

Experience Required

We are looking for experienced pipeline engineering professionals who can demonstrate:

  • Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Pipeline Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status (or actively working toward CEng/IEng)
  • Extensive experience in pipeline engineering design and high-pressure transmission systems
  • Strong knowledge of IGEM/TD/1, TD/13, gas transmission standards, and relevant pipeline design codes
  • Proven experience working across pipeline routing, AGI design, piping specifications, and mechanical design packages
  • Experience delivering engineering work across FEED and detailed design stages
  • Strong understanding of engineering calculations, design processes, and technical scope development
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering and large infrastructure project environments
  • Ability to resolve operational, integrity, and design-related engineering issues
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills when working with clients, contractors, and project teams

Technical Experience

Experience with the following systems and software is highly desirable:

  • AutoCAD
  • AutoCAD Plant 3D
  • Navisworks
  • BIM 360
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of ASME design codes (advantageous)

Project Environment

You will support a range of major UK infrastructure and energy transition projects including:

  • Hydrogen pipeline transmission systems
  • Carbon dioxide transport infrastructure
  • Natural gas transmission networks
  • Carbon capture and storage systems
  • Future fuels and decarbonisation technologies

This role offers exposure to first-of-a-kind technologies that will play a critical role in shaping the future of UK energy infrastructure.

Why Apply?

  • Work on nationally significant energy transition projects
  • Join a highly technical and collaborative engineering environment
  • Take ownership of technically complex, high-profile infrastructure projects
  • Opportunity to play a key role in the future of low-carbon engineering and sustainable energy infrastructure
  • Flexible remote working with occasional UK travel

If you are a senior pipeline engineering professional looking for a technically challenging contract role within the rapidly evolving low-carbon energy sector, we would love to hear from you.
