Industrial Painter

As a ICATS Industrial Painter, you will be responsible for carrying out high-quality hand application touch-up painting to structural steelwork and associated components on a marine pier construction project prior to client handover. The role involves restoring protective coating systems where damage has occurred during construction, ensuring all repairs meet the project specification, manufacturer's recommendations, and quality requirements.
The successful candidate will be competent in industrial coating repairs, surface preparation, and the safe use of painting equipment while working within a live construction environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out hand-applied touch-up painting to structural steelwork and associated components.
• Prepare damaged areas by removing rust, contamination, and defective coatings using approved mechanical hand tools and abrasive methods as specified.
• Feather existing coatings to achieve a smooth transition before repainting.
• Mix and apply industrial protective coatings in accordance with the manufacturer's technical data sheets.
• Apply primers, intermediate coats, and finish coats to the specified dry film thickness (DFT).
• Ensure repaired areas match the surrounding finish in appearance, colour, and performance.
• Carry out coating repairs in accordance with project specifications and inspection requirements.
• Record batch numbers, environmental conditions, and completed repairs where required.
• Maintain painting equipment, brushes, rollers, and associated hand tools in good working order.
• Protect adjacent surfaces from overspray, contamination, and damage.
• Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout the work area.
• Report coating defects, damage, or quality concerns to the Painting Supervisor.
• Work closely with inspectors, quality personnel, and other trades to complete outstanding snagging items before project handover.

Health & Safety Responsibilities

• Comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and all site safety rules.
• Follow approved Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
• Wear and maintain all required PPE.
• Use appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE) where specified.
• Handle paints, solvents, and hazardous substances in accordance with COSHH assessments.
• Ensure adequate ventilation when working in enclosed or restricted areas.
• Prevent environmental contamination by correctly storing and disposing of paint waste and contaminated materials.
• Stop work and report any unsafe conditions immediately.
• Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and site inspections.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as an industrial protective coatings applicator.
• Experience carrying out coating repairs and snagging works on structural steel.
• Competent in hand preparation and hand application techniques.
• Knowledge of protective coating systems used in marine or heavy industrial environments.
• Ability to interpret coating specifications and manufacturers' technical data sheets.
• Understanding of dry film thickness requirements and coating quality standards.
• Good attention to detail with a commitment to delivering a high-quality finish.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Working Hours: 07:00am - 17:00pm (10 hours paid)
