Job Purpose
The Approved Electrician is responsible for carrying out electrical installation, testing, inspection, maintenance, and fault-finding works on highways infrastructure projects in Norwich. The role ensures all electrical works are completed safely, in compliance with current regulations, and to project specifications and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Installation Works
Install, terminate, and test highway electrical systems including:
Street lighting columns and lanterns
Feeder pillars and distribution boards
Traffic signals and control equipment
CCTV and ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) infrastructure
Ducting, cabling, and containment systems
Install earthing and bonding systems in accordance with project requirements.
2. Inspection, Testing & Certification
Carry out inspection and testing in accordance with BSI Group standards and current regulations.
Complete Electrical Installation Certificates (EIC), Minor Works Certificates, and test documentation.
Ensure compliance with the Institution of Engineering and Technology Wiring Regulations (BS 7671 - 18th Edition).
Conduct fault diagnosis and rectification on existing highway electrical assets.
3. Health, Safety & Compliance
Work in accordance with the Health and Safety Executive regulations and company HSE policies.
Follow safe systems of work including permit-to-work procedures and traffic management requirements.
Use appropriate PPE and ensure safe isolation procedures are followed.
Participate in toolbox talks and safety briefings.
4. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate daily work records.
Report defects, material shortages, and safety concerns promptly.
Assist with asset data capture and as-built documentation.
5. Teamwork & Coordination
Work collaboratively with highways operatives, civil teams, and subcontractors.
Support apprentices and junior electricians when required.
Liaise with supervisors to ensure works are completed to programme.
Qualifications & Certifications (Essential)
NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent.
City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection & Testing) or equivalent.
18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
ECS Gold Card (Approved Electrician).
Full UK Driving Licence.
IPAF (preferred).
Street Works (NRSWA) qualification (preferred).
Highways Sector Scheme (HERS) accreditation (advantageous).
Experience
Minimum 3-5 years' experience in electrical installation.
Experience in highways or street lighting projects preferred.
Experience working in live traffic environments is desirable.
Skills & Competencies
Strong understanding of highway electrical systems.
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
Competent in fault-finding and diagnostics.
Good communication and organisational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong safety awareness.
Working Conditions
Site-based role across Norwich and surrounding areas.
Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
May include night work or weekend shifts to accommodate traffic management requirements.
Participation in standby or call-out rota may be required.
