We are currently recruiting for an experienced Design Manager to join a major data centre project in Frankfurt, Germany.

This is a senior project-based position responsible for coordinating and managing the design process across multiple disciplines, ensuring design information is delivered accurately, efficiently and in line with key project milestones.

You will work closely with the Project Manager, client, architects, consultants and internal design and construction teams. You will also lead a small team of design professionals, managing workloads, priorities and deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.

The Role

As Design Manager, you will be responsible for managing the design delivery process from initial planning and consultant procurement through to construction and project close-out.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and maintain the overall Design Delivery Schedule.
  • Coordinate design activities between the client, Project Manager, consultants, architects and internal teams.
  • Establish clear scopes of work and deliverables for each discipline.
  • Support the procurement and appointment of design consultants.
  • Manage consultant performance against programme, scope, quality and commercial requirements.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams and ensure information is delivered on time.
  • Prioritise design workloads and allocate resources effectively.
  • Lead and manage a small design team of approximately 2-6 direct reports.
  • Review design information to ensure accuracy, coordination and quality.
  • Manage design document control and information flow.
  • Track design deliverables against key project milestones.
  • Identify design risks, delays and potential programme slippage.
  • Develop and implement recovery strategies where required.
  • Maintain design and cost trackers in support of the Project Manager.
  • Attend and contribute to design, engineering, planning and coordination meetings.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, architects and other project stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to optimise designs and improve project efficiency.
  • Provide technical and design support to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with project planning, programming and reporting.
  • Ensure effective communication between the design and construction teams.

About You

The successful candidate will have a strong background in design management within construction, engineering or architecture, with proven experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing design delivery on complex projects.

You should be confident managing consultants, leading design teams and ensuring that critical design information is delivered to programme.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering, construction, architectural or related discipline.
  • 5-7+ years' experience within the construction, engineering or architectural sector.
  • Proven experience managing design delivery across multiple disciplines.
  • Strong multidisciplinary coordination experience.
  • Previous experience managing a design team or small project team.
  • Experience managing design programmes, deliverables, fees and costs.
  • Strong understanding of design processes and project delivery.
  • Experience working within a BIM environment.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to demanding deadlines.
  • High standards regarding quality and presentation of work.

Desirable

  • Previous experience working on data centre or mission-critical projects.
  • Experience within major construction or M&E environments.
  • Experience managing external design consultants.
  • Strong BIM coordination experience.
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Previous international construction experience.
  • Experience liaising directly with clients, architects and consultants.

The Person

We are looking for a proactive and commercially aware Design Manager who can take ownership of the design process and drive delivery in a fast-paced construction environment.

You will need to be an excellent communicator with strong organisational and leadership skills, capable of managing multiple stakeholders while ensuring design deadlines are achieved.

The ability to identify issues early, coordinate effective solutions and maintain high standards of design quality will be essential to success in this role.
