World Suicide Prevention Day 2020

Today, September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) which provides an opportunity for those across the world to raise awareness of suicide and suicide prevention. The theme once again this year is ‘Working together to prevent suicide’ which has also been the theme for the last two years.

World Suicide Prevention Day was started in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide prevention or IASP. With this in mind, every year suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally with The World Health Organisation estimating that 800,000 people take their own life each year, that’s one person every 40 seconds. And with every suicide that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted suicides. With figures like that, promoting suicide prevention is key.

Preventing suicide is often possible and we can all play a part in its prevention. Help us raise awareness about the issue, educate yourselves and others about the causes and warning signs of suicide, show compassion and offer a friendly face to those who are in distress within your community. Sometimes, all it can take is a smile.

Covid-19 has affected us all in different ways, bringing challenges no-one thought we’d face during our everyday lives. With things changing fast each day, many of us are worrying about what it means for ourselves and our loved ones. With this in mind, it is more important now than ever to check up on your friends and family, offering them the vital support they may need during these uncertain times.

Here at Mane, we support all of our employee’s and take mental health extremely seriously. We believe World Suicide Prevention Day is a great campaign which will hopefully inform more and more people about mental health and provide them with the right information on how to handle it a
