Lead T&I + Logistics (Offshore) - Princess Elisabeth Energy Island Project
Project Scope:
The Princess Elisabeth Energy Island Project aims to develop and construct a new grid infrastructure, including offshore transmission systems and cables, in the Belgian part of the North Sea. This initiative follows Belgium's Marine Spatial Plan 2020-2026, which designates new zones for the production and transmission of renewable energy within the "Princess Elisabeth wind farm area." The target capacity for this project is to connect a maximum of 3.5 GW.
The primary objective is to create an energy hub - an artificial island - to facilitate an efficient and reliable connection between new Belgian offshore power and the mainland. Additionally, the island will serve as a connection point for (hybrid) inter connectors, supporting the optimal utilisation of power production areas in other parts of the North Sea. This energy hub will contribute to a meshed network at sea, ensuring the balanced distribution of offshore energy production among different consumption centres.
Project Components:
The project comprises the following elements (Packages):
- Construction of an artificial energy island to house offshore HVAC and HVDC transmission infrastructure within the Princess Elisabeth windfarm area.
- 66 kV and 220 kV AC substations (located on the island).
- Six 220kV AC cable systems connecting the artificial island to the shore.
- An offshore HVDC Converter Station (located on the island).
- A DC Switching Station (located on the island, designed to connect future interconnectors with European countries).
The AC and DC substations involve topsides/modules constructed onshore, which will be transported to the energy island. Installation will be carried out using a lifting vessel or barge + SPMTs (Self-Propelled Modular Transporters). Following the installation, modules will be interconnected, requiring a comprehensive logistics campaign for materials and personnel.
