Currently, the UK has already delivered more than 300,000 artillery shells to Ukraine and the Defence Security has announced plans to deliver even more. This will work alongside the unity of partners and allies, all of which are focusing on delivering military support to the country.

During a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) - which brings together ministers and officials from close to 50 nations, with the aim of coordinating international support for Ukraine - the Defence Secretary announced the plans, highlighting the UK’s dedication to providing munitions to help Ukraine's defence. The UDCG meeting also gave Shapps a chance to meet Ukraine’s new Defence Minister, Rustem Umervo.

Grant Shapps, the UK’s Defence Secretary said: “Today we’ve demonstrated the UK’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine and set out more military support, including pledging tens of thousands more artillery shells to enable Ukraine to defend itself against Russia’s unprovoked invasion and to retake illegally occupied territories.

“To ensure Ukraine has what it needs to defend itself as we approach winter, we have also set out how the UK will go further in the coming months in our priority support areas, including air defence and long-range strike capabilities, and training.”

Key Areas of Support for Ukraine

During the UDCG meeting, the Defence Secretary detailed key areas of support in the coming months. This included air defence to protect the national infrastructure in Ukraine, especially during the winter months, and more artillery munitions. Shapps also highlighted his dedication to supporting Ukraine to recover and repair existing equipment.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, Chief of the Defence Staff, explained: “With representatives from 50 nations gathered in Ramstein today, President Putin should be worried. This is a tangible demonstration of the international community’s continued resolve to back Ukraine with the military support it requires through the winter and into 2024.”

The UK has already provided £2.3 billion worth of military support to Ukraine in 2022, and this is going to be maintained in 2023. This support has included donating modern tanks, training Ukrainian tank crews and supplying thousands of weapons, ammunition, clothing, mine detection equipment and generators. Delivering tens of thousands more artillery shells is will boost this even further.
