Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that the growth rate for engineering roles is not looking great over the next decade. Despite this, engineering business experts claim differently, stating that the government is out of touch with reality and that in fact there is a growing demand for all types of engineers. Engineering professionals feel that the engineering sector will continue to grow in demand over the next decade.

In fact, UK businesses today are actually finding it challenging to fill engineering jobs, which suggests that engineering is a high-demand sector that young talent should consider getting into.

It’s not uncommon for businesses to be recruiting for a position for months. Meanwhile, the usual time for an engineer to obtain a job is under two weeks. On top of this,  many candidates are considering between a few different offers at once. This suggests that there are not currently enough engineers to meet the demands of employers.

Which sectors need engineers?

There is a growing demand for manufacturing, quality, software and automation engineers. Many businesses are seeking engineers with fifteen years of experience, which would make them the best in the talent pool. These types of positions are extremely competitive to fill.

Even the aerospace and defence sectors are seeking more engineers than ever before. With this in mind, businesses are more open to hiring junior engineers who can demonstrate a willingness to learn and develop. If a candidate can prove that they wish to enter the job role with a hands-on approach, then businesses will be more than happy to take them on board.

In 2023, soft skills are just as important as technical skills. The most desirable soft skills in the engineering sector include great communication and emotional intelligence. If a candidate can offer these soft skills then they are far more likely to succeed in the role. In terms of technical skills, there is a growing demand for ISO, Six Sigma, CAD experience and LEAN manufacturing.

Engineers may be surprised to learn that many businesses will pay higher salaries than originally anticipated, along with a multitude of job benefits such as health insurance, flexible schedules and pensions. Whilst fully remote positions are not possible due to engineers being required on site, businesses are doing their best to implement remote working days where possible to offer their employees a better work-life balance.

What should the engineers of today do?

Engineers can now be more picky about the organisations they choose to work for. Experts suggest that midsized businesses bring about the best opportunities for engineers. This is because a midsized business will provide with a variety of projects to work on meanwhile remaining small enough for engineers to build strong personal relationships with others in their team.

Employers must enhance company culture to attract the best talent to their business. Engineers will be looking out for these green flags when applying for positions.
